From mechanic’s garage to one of London’s best and best loved clubs in under a year. Perpetually menaced by closure and redevelopment, The Cause stands as an almost lone island of culture and fun as Tottenham Hale transforms into a jungle of soulless new developments. And yet, with every setback they have innovated their way to not just survive but to grow – all the while raising over £100,000 for good causes – and covid has proved no different.
Never likely to settle for shutting up shop and waiting, The Cause did what they know best and got out the hammer and drill and adapted. The existing terrace has been revamped and turned into Costa del Tottenham Southside with DJ sessions and food taken care of by Club Mexicana and People’s Burger. And they’ve taken over a cavernous tunnel – dubbed Costa del Tottenham Northside – and transformed it into a beer hall with queer cabaret and drag queens on roller skates. It’s wonderful.
And the most exciting development is yet to come… Having already agreed to take over the huge adjoining warehouse space – dubbed The Theatre – they were planning to open it for Easter with, according to founder Stuart Glen, a ‘ridiculous unannounced back-to-back from two Chicago OGs’. God we would have loved that. While other clubs would have given up hope The Cause has successfully raised funds to continue the expansion and promises to open The Theatre soon.
The Cause and Costa del Tottenham embody everything that is good about London: open, inclusive, fun, ambitious, creative, resilient. We support The Cause and you should too.
